Wayside Cross, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny.

Location – Located in the middle of Freshford next to the large green on Brewery Street.

OS: S 40659 64725

Longitude: -7.3987684

Latitude: 52.732367

Description and History – Blink and you’ll miss it! Not much remains of this wayside cross, and it was only after I had looked it up later in the day that I realised it was anything at all, so I only took one photo of it, which is rare for me. Little remains of this cross, which now sits next to the town green. It was moved by Sir William Morres of Uppercourt c.1800 from its original location about 600m away to its present location. It was erected shortly after 1622 in memory of Lucas Shee by his wife Ellen Butler. It was described in 1835 as being in poor condition, vandalised but still containing part of an inscription asking passers-by to pray for the soul of Lucas Shee. This inscription is no longer legible. A small section of the cross shaft remains on a three tiered base.

Difficulty – Easy and right next to the green.

Date of Visit – 17th July, 2024.
