Ballycuneen, Standing Stone, Co. Clare.

Location – About 1km from Shannon town this stone is located next to a little track-way. You can drive right up to it but turning around is the hard part so I would recommend parking on the road and walking the 100m to the stone.

See map at the bottom of the page.

Description and History – The stone is badly eroded and about 80cm tall and aligned E-W. I had no idea what to expect here and was a little disappointed to find such a small stone but I was even more disappointed to see a wooden stake driven into the ground right next to it. I’m sure this has an impact on the stone which can’t be good.

Difficulty – Easy enough to find.

It's not a large stone as can be seen.

Ballinphunta, Church, Co. Clare.

Location – In Craughaun cemetery in Cratloe about 4km from Limerick city. It is a little tricky to find. The OS map shows it near the railway line but it is actually about 10m away near the entrance to the cemetery. Getting to the cemetery is the hard part. You will need to take the turning about 100m South of the grid reference. The entrance doubles as a house entrance but go past the house, keeping it on your left, and you will come to the cemetery carpark.

See map at the bottom of the page.

Description and History – I could find out no information about the history of this cemetery but it looks like a typical medieval parish church. There is little left apart from incomplete sections of three walls with the W wall largely missing. While the graveyard is well maintained, sadly, this ruin is not and is a little bit of a dumping ground as you can see in the pictures below. There is one remains window in the S wall and this shows that there was once some nice stone work here.

Difficulty – Easy enough to get to if you can find your way to the graveyard.
