Temple Mor, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – Part of the main St. Mullin’s complex.

Description and History – This 15th century structure is one of the more complete structures at St. Mullin’s. Measuring 19.5m x 5.7m both gable ends and side walls stand to full height and there is a double belfry on the nave/chancel wall. The entrance is in the west gable end.

Difficulty – Easy.

Oratory, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – Part of the main St. Mullin’s complex.

Description and History – Another relatively complete structure at St. Mullin’s. This is a simple rectangular church with an impressive stone lintel in the W gable end. The interior is now covered with later medieval and modern grave markers and this church was locked (for unknown reason) when we visited this site. The building measures 7.3m x 4.9m.

Difficulty – Easy.

St. Mullin's Temple, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – Part of the main St. Mullin’s complex.

Description and History – This is an odd little structure and I can only imagine that it was once much larger in order for it to have been a church. What remains is a small barrel vaulted chamber.

Difficulty – Easy.

View from the otherside.

St. Mullin's Abbey, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location - Part of the main complex.

Description and History – This is by far the largest church in the complex and the sadly the most ruined. It must have been very impressive when it was complete. It is a long and narrow medieval rectangular structure measuring 23.3m x 7.2m. Portions of the walls have been demolished and what remains shows evidence of restructuring for both domestic and defensive purposes. The SW corner stands to full height with spiral stairs still visible. There are many interesting features visible on this ruin.

Difficulty – Easy.

A pit in the ruin. I'm not sure of its purpose.

Reconstructed doorway.

St. James's Cell, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – At the rear of the main site.

Description and History – This is the smallest structure at the site and puts me in mind of Temple Ciaran at Clonmacnoise. It’s too small to be a church and was likely a small cell dwelling, hence the name. It measures 2.1m x 2.5m and is made from coursed granite rubble as are all the structures at the site. There is a small window in the E gable end. This is a charming little ruin.

Difficulty – Easy.

Round Tower, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – Part of the main complex.

Description and History – Only a small portion of the round tower remains. How high it may have been is impossible to tell. The internal diameter of the tower is nearly 3m and is also made of granite.

Difficulty – Easy.

High Cross, St. Mullin's, Co. Carlow.

Location – Part of the main complex.

Description and History – The solid-wheeled cross shows a depiction of Christ on the cross and stands 1.6mk in height. The base and shaft are decorated and the lower portions of the shaft are missing.

Difficulty – Easy.
